About the iMentor Partnership

For our first year of partnership at New York Harbor School, iMentor works with three Advisory classes, matching 47 tenth-grade students with volunteer mentors from New York City. Part of a two-year match, these students work with iMentor to focus on college options and academic success, as well as building personal support. iMentor brings mentors from a variety of backgrounds to NYHS in effort to further enrich their already diverse and interesting curriculum, and to explore career options and future opportunities for the students. Because the students work with the College Summit program during the rest of the week, iMentor provides complementary support to New York Harbor School’s existing programming and classwork.

About New York Harbor School

Opening in September of 2003, New York Harbor School is New York City’s first maritime high school. Students learn a curriculum of water-related studies and extracurricular activities like marine biology, water and environmental conservation, sailing, fishing, swimming and boatbuilding while satisfying state high school education requirements. They “envision recruiting students interested in water-related careers and teaching them the skills, content and certifications necessary to excel in the water-related field they choose and especially in their post-secondary education. Through this program that converges water-related experiences with a core academic curriculum, students will gain a deep understanding of the role water has played in their lives, and in the lives of all New Yorkers and people throughout the world.”

New York Harbor School partners with The South Street Seaport Museum and the Waterkeeper Alliance and in September of 2006, the school joined the Urban Assembly network of schools. Currently located in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York Harbor School looks forward to their move to Governors Island in the near future.

NYHS is the one of several Urban Assembly high schools that iMentor has partnered with since 2007. To learn more about Urban Assembly, a non-profit organization that creates and manages a community of New York City Public Schools dedicated to preparing students from under-resourced neighborhoods for success in four-year colleges, please visit: http://www.urbanassembly.org/
