About the iMentor Partnership

Sheepshead Bay High School is iMentor’s most veteran partner site: we are proud to have been working with teacher Robin Kovat since 2000! This year, iMentor will work with two of Robin’s classes: Freshman Social Science Research and Law class and the 12th grade Leadership, Advisement, Support course.

Social Science Research and Law class is an honors-level course designed to teach students primary social science research skills as well as how to apply legal concepts. Many of the students in this course go on to take Advanced Social Science Research and to participate in the moot court and mock trial team during sophomore year. iMentor’s Core Curriculum has been an enriching resource for the students’ course work, as they explore community issues with their mentors in addition to exploring academic and career opportunities.

The Leadership, Advisement, and Support course, or LAS, is a new social studies elective course that Robin designed to provide extra support for seniors struggling to graduate on time. iMentor figures prominently in the course, where mentors complement coursework and provide advice and support, as well as career and college skills. Additionally, students in LAS participate in community service activities, learn how to advocate for themselves, and practice important public speaking skills that will translate to life after Sheepshead.

Over the years, iMentor has matched over 250 students at Sheepshead Bay with mentors. Ms. Kovat, a member of iMentor’s Advisory Board and one of the longest participating teachers in the program, continues to integrate the iMentor curriculum into her classes with much enthusiasm.

We are so glad to be back at Sheepshead Bay High School again this year!
