About the iMentor Partnership

Brooklyn International HS (BIHS) has been an iMentor Partner Site since 2004. This school is unique in its rich diversity of students. As a member of the Internationals Network of Public Schools, BIHS serves recent immigrant students who have been in the United States for four years or less. The students represent 40 different countries from all around the world, including the Dominican Republic, China, Pakistan, Sudan and many more. In all, the students speak 30 different native languages! Through regular communication with their mentors and the use of iMentor’s technology, mentees at BIHS make significant improvements in their English language and technology skills throughout the program year.

This year iMentor will be working with half of the junior class under the direction of Jennifer Michalsky and Kathleen Rucker. These teachers work together to integrate the iMentor program into the 11th grade curriculum. iMentor is excited to be working with Jennifer, Kathleen, and the BIHS juniors for another year!

About Brooklyn International High School

Mission: The Brooklyn International High School, a member of the International Schools Partnership and the Center for Collaborative Education, is a small school for recently arrived immigrant students who are just learning English. Its mission is to assist new learners of English in developing their linguistic, intellectual, cultural, and collaborative abilities so that they become active participants in today’s interdependent worlds.

At Brooklyn International High School students learn to read, write, and speak English fluently. English is taught through literature, social studies, math, science, career education, and the arts so that students are prepared for college and the world of work when they graduate.

The Brooklyn International High School is a community, and the native languages, cultures, and families of its students are viewed as a resource for the students, the school, and society. Students use their native languages to support their learning of English and are encouraged to use their own and others’ cultural backgrounds as a resource which will enhance and enrich their learning experience. The school encourages and supports parental involvement.
