iMentor today announced it was awarded a $500,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to scale and evaluate its innovative mentoring model to help youth from low-income communities graduate high school college-ready and succeed in college. iMentor will use the funding to reach more students through its New York City program, implement iMentor’s model nationally in partnership with leading nonprofits, and perform the most comprehensive independent evaluation ever conducted on mentoring.

iMentor CEO, Mike O'Brien, was interviewed by PIX 11 Morning News about iMentor's 100 Mentor Pledge. The pledge was announced by Mayor Mike Bloomberg in his State of the City address, and was highlighted as part of the mayor's education plan to improve college and career-readiness for the city's high school students.

Today in his State of the City address, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced that iMentor is partnering with 10 leading New York-based companies that will each recruit 100 of their employees to serve as mentors for high school students in low-income communities. These additional volunteers will allow iMentor to expand its program in New York City to help 1,000 additional students succeed in high school, college, and careers.

Research shows that prospective college students and their families have difficulty finding information about college, particularly the availability of financial aid and grants. To address this challenge, Lumina Foundation has awarded more than $1.1 million in planning grants aimed at helping develop the “next generation” of college-access supports and services. These “NextGen” grants are designed to leverage the power of digital technology to promote new and innovative ways to support students on their pathway to college.

As the 2011-2012 school year gets underway, iMentor’s newest programs and partner schools will ensure that iMentor’s high school students in underserved communities are prepared to reach their full potential in their academic careers.

One of New York City’s largest mentoring programs is calling upon male Bronxites to provide a helping hand. Since 1999, iMentor has matched adult mentors with young high school students from underserved communities in the five boroughs. These students are enrolled in multi-year programs with one-on-one matches who have graduated college and are assisted with their education to lead them to higher education.

Maria Fernandez, 45, a mother of three, struggles financially to support her family while pursuing a college degree. “It becomes very frustrating when you can’t make ends meet for your kids,” Fernandez said. Fortunate for her and other struggling students, Miami Dade College has partnered with an organization called iMentor to form a Single Stop mentoring program.

El dominicano Francisco Ventura, 38, tiene un año sirviendo de mentor a un joven estudiante. "Me siento orgulloso de mi pupilo, porque logró ingresar a la universidad. Mi estudiante es un joven recién llegado que no dominaba el inglés, pero superó grandes obstáculos". Ventura es parte del sistema de IMentor, un programa de tutoreo para estudiantes de bajos recursos que están en la secundaria.
