About the iMentor Partnership

The Urban Assembly School for Performing Arts and iMentor began their partnership in 2008. iMentor was proud to support the school’s founding graduating class of 2010. This year’s senior class is entering the second year of their two-year match and will continue to build on the strong relationships that were developed last year.

The goal of the partnership is forstudents to achieve academic success and cultivate artistic vision while focusing on the college application and acceptance process. The senior class engages in their iMentor session during their English classes and Dorian Herron, the teacher who staffs the iMentor classes, works with iMentor as a partnership advocate to engage students in weekly emails and monthly events. The students focus on composing well-written and articulate e-mails to their mentors using the professional and college-level writing skills they are also focusing on through their English curriculum.

The Urban Assembly School for Performing Arts partnership is a unique opportunity for mentors to connect with well-rounded students pursuing careers in the arts. The role of the mentor in the performing arts environment is integral as they support students at a pivotal time in their talent development. Mentors support students throughout the artistic and academic process and are invited to attend annual performances, including the Winter Showcase.

By using the arts as a teaching tool that provides students with the means to express themselves, the school aims to breathe life and creativity into all subjects and build confidence in all members of our school community. The school uses the cultural and professional resources of New York City to ensure that students receive a rigorous education that exceeds state standards, are successful in earning a college degree, and have a vision for what the future holds.
