“I'm thankful that theygave me an outgoingperson as a mentorbecause it showed methat I can truly becomfortable.”
A Great Match
Arjenis was looking for a mentor who was a “heavy dreamer” with business experience, math expertise, and someone who could provide him solid guidance in the college application process. Jon is a mentor who attended Yale University and was a very high performing student during high school and college; he also works in Finance and has experience in mentoring.
This pair was matched because Arjenis wants to improve in school and is a very bright young man; Jon is very driven, he challenges Arjenis in emails to be better and achieve greater things. He pushes Arjenis with intelligent conversation and helps him define his goals. They both love books and movies. Their conversations extend well beyond the prompt topics; they often email each other more than twice a week!
Impact of Their Relationship
Over the course of Arjenis’ and Jon’s mentoring relationship, Arjenis’ has become a more focused, confident student. Arjenis’ attendance has been better, and when he is not in class Jon is aware of the fact and encourages him to attend. In the classroom during iMentor sessions, Arjenis is not distracted – he is completely focused on emailing his mentor and continuing their correspondence. Arjenis is more open to take direction and entertain other points of view. He initiates more intelligent discussion with his friends and teachers in the class.
Email Builds A Relationship
This is an email exchange that took place right after Arjenis and Jon met for the first time. This was their 3rd email of that particular week. They had already addressed the prompt for this session in another email, and had moved on to their own discussion of books and movies, college, sports, vacations, etc... and it also continues their conversation from the Kick Off Event.

Arjenis,
I must say that it was absolutely awesome to meet you. You truly are impressive and your maturity and direction impressed me tremendously. It really was a fun night and I can really tell that we will have a rewarding experience together. You'll be happy toknow as well that we dominated our basketball in a thrilling victory, earning us a playoff birth.
I think that it is great that you want to go to Hofstra and it seems like your long term goals are great. College is a great time and what makes me happy is that you want to have fun there but still focus on studying too.
Alright, a quick deviation from life and a little about popular entertainment as we were talking about yesterday. So I will pick up Eragon once I finish my current book and at some point when my girlfriend isn't around I will watch the Saw. You should try to pick up the movie Wall Street. This movie is a great example of why greed can go wrong and how important family is. It also is a great exaggeration of how Wall Street worked in the eighties. Some other good Wall Street books are "Barbarians at the Gates," and "Monkey Business. "
Anyway man, I gotta run but I will keep my end of the promise and see what I can find out about Hofstra. This website is a okay start http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_books/ . The internet is a really good source and it certainly is a great idea to check out the Hofstra website.
Again, it was awesome meeting you and I could not have asked for a better mentee.

Jon,
I agree 100%, it was G.R.E.A.T. meeting you. They couldn't havegiven me a better mentor. You yourself are an impressive person. Isee our friendship going far. I'm thankful that they gave me an outgoing person as a mentor because it showed me that I can truly be comfortable. It's phenomenal how you like the show Entourage which gave a lot of points seeing as it's my favorite show on earth.
Well off topic, I will definitely look into those movies. I want to see the crazy antics within those Wall Street movies. It would be very interesting to see how they portrayed Wall Street in the movies back then. Now as for Saw, definitely watch it.I would suggest seeing it from the beginning, from movies 1-3 and then seeing the most recent which part 4 is. I in exchange will see Pan's Labyrinth. It will be something different for me because I have never heard of amovie that incorporated child fantasy with real-time events. Once I finish reading my book I will check out therest of the Eragon series. Thank you very much for your help in my college choosing. I will look up as much as there is to look up for Hofstra, but I will keep my options open because there are other universities that might offer something better.
On the subject of my ski/snowboarding trip, me and the guys will be heading to the Pocono's probably the second week of December. Wish me luck, because I will definitely need it lol. Oh and Congratulations on your victory and I wish you the best of luck in your playoff games. I'm confident no mercy will be shown and that victory will be in your hands. Well as you know this is my senior year and I'll be attending prom, and I would like to know if what would you rather choose, a party bus or a limo to take you around the city?? This is a big debate going on between some of us seniors, and I would also like to know if going to the Hampton's is a cool idea? I have never been there and I really would like to explore what's out there and what better way to spend your weekend then a weekend in the Hampton's.
Once again it was a pleasure meeting you, hope to hear from you soon man.
Take care.
