Alumni Pairs Program FAQs

GENERAL PROGRAM FAQs

Can I mentor a new mentee and still participate in the Alumni Pairs Program with my Alumni Pairs mentee?

Of Course! There should be no conflict between your weekly participation in the iMentor program and your participation as an Alumni Pair mentor.

What if my mentee does not have access to the Internet at home?

iMentor invites all mentees to our offices between 2:30 and 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday to access the Internet using our wireless laptop lab. Mentees can also use computers at their school or local library.

I will be moving out of the city/state/country. Can I still partcipate in the program?

Yes! Many of our mentors AND mentees have moved away for work, school, or personal reasons and still frequently communicate via email.

MEET WITH YOUR MENTEE FAQs

Now that I am in the Alumni Pairs program, what are the meeting guidelines?

iMentor wants to make sure that all mentees--including those in the Alumni Pairs Program--are safe at school, events, and meeting with their mentors.  Therefore, meeting guidelines during the formal match still apply. Here are some meeting suggestions:

If your mentee is under 18 years old meetings must have the supervision of an iMentor staff person or school or after-school program staff.

  • iMentor-sponsored events
  • Classroom visit

If your mentee is 18 years or older the meetings must take in a kid-friendly public place.

  • Trip to a museum
  • Meet for lunch
  • Workplace visit

**If your mentee is under 18 years old and you would like to meet outside of iMentor/school events you MUST be fingerprinted by the Department of Education**

What if I’ve been fingerprinted by my employer?

iMentor is ONLY able to use fingerprints taken by the NYC Department of Education. The fingerprinting process used by the NYC Department of Education is an ongoing check-up, which keeps iMentor informed of any new offenses.

What if I want to get fingerprinted by the Department of Education?

Contact the Alumni Pairs Coordinator, Michelle Choi at michelle@imentor.org.
