iMentor Skills for Career Advancement (SCA) Workshop Series
SESSION #2 OFFICE TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP
Overview:
In this session, you will be building on your technology skills and learning advanced applications for Microsoft Office software. These are skills you will need to know BEFORE you get a job. They will also allow you to apply for higher quality jobs and be a more effective employee AFTER you get hired. This session will teach you new skills in three important Microsoft Office applications:
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft PowerPoint
Below you will find a series of "How To" guides that will show you how to use some advanced features of each application. Using these guides as a reference, you will be able to complete a fun assignment that will allow you to practice your new skills and demonstrate what you have learned. Here is a brief description of the assignment:
Imagine that you work as a project management team for a concert production company. The city of Brooklyn is planning a July 4th celebration concert this summer, and your company is one of several that the city has asked for proposals. The city wants three of the country’s hottest artists to perform at this show, but they don’t know who they should pick, so they need a company like yours to do the research.
This research will involve asking a representative sample of the target audience for the concert (teenage students from throughout New York City) to rate five artists on a 10-point scale to determine which three artists are the most popular. You will also need to put together a budget that shows how much it will cost to produce the concert. The "raw" data and all the information that you will need are provided below.
It will be up to you to use Excel, Word, and PowerPoint to analyze the data and put together a convincing proposal “pitch” that will impress Brooklyn city officials and make them want to produce YOUR concert and not your competitors’.
By completing the assignment, you will be eligible to enter in SCA’s Session #2 Skills Competition (see details in the "Instructions" document below). The winner of this competition will receive a $30 gift certificate to BARNES & NOBLE!
The winners of this year's contest are Gerald Antoine and David Sosa from Westinghouse HS!
