Mentor of the Month

Meet some of our outstanding mentors

Every month, iMentor identifies one, outstanding mentor who goes above and beyond the requirements for the program. We are excited to recognize and share the amazing work our volunteer mentors do.

Kavan Brandon & Bernier Lauredan

July 2011
Kavan Brandon and Bernier Lauredan both know what it takes to make a difference in their mentees’ lives. They also know the benefits of teamwork; they have utilized their friendship to make a greater impact on their mentees.

Marc Kelly

June 2011
As his mentee, Rafael, exclaimed, “If there were four events a month my mentor would be at all of them!” This is why Marc Kelly has been chosen as June’s Mentor of the Month!

Maggie Hernandez

May 2011
What Makes Maggie Our Mentor of the Month? Maggie is: SUPPORTIVE and CREATIVE. Maggie, one of our new mentors from Citi, knows what it takes to make a difference with her mentee.

Raj Singh

April 2011
Raj has gone above and beyond to make sure his mentee, Dominique, knows that he is there to support him.

The Mentors at the High School for Violin and Dance

March 2011
Mentoring, although impactful, is no easy task. No one knows this more than our mentors at the High School of Violin and Dance (HSVD).

Emilie Castro

August 2010
Since being matched two years ago the two continue to email consistently (both at 100% during this year) and Emilie continues demonstrating to Angela that she will always care about her.

Judy Rosen

July 2010
One thing that stood out to me in our email this week was your comments about inspiring your classmates to study hard and also that you don't worry about what other people say.

Jason Juceam

June 2010
While he does a great job of sharing and explaining his own opinions, he is always willing to listen and empathize with a differing perspective.

David N.

May 2010
While David and Jackey have met at almost all of our events throughout the year, David always follows up with Jackey about his academic and career related interests. David is great at taking extra care in responding to Jackey’s emails.

Mark Guralnick

April 2010
Mark is extremely supportive of Hamdan and uses any possible opportunity to help him achieve his goals. One example is when Mark worked with Hamdan's college counselor to set-up a tour for Hamdan and his friends at his top college choice: CUNY John Jay.

Ann Roberts

March 2010
Ann shows her support by verbalizing her admiration for Isis’ strengths and goes the extra mile to make sure they meet each month at iMentor events. Not only does Ann meet Isis often, but she supports Isis’ creative work in fashion design and loves to look at Isis’ creative ideas during the time they spend together.

Jodi Beck

February 2010
Jodi has been incredibly consistent and proactive throughout her match with Mandognin. They were matched late in the first year, but Jodi immediately became a positive and supportive force in Mandognin’s life.

Dominique Fenner

January 2010
In the third year of their match, Dominique has gone above and beyond in helping her mentee, Tysha, to navigate the complicated transition out of high school and to figure out her next steps. Since Tysha graduated from the Bronx Academy of Letters last June, Dominique has helped her locate job and internship resources, worked with her to trouble-shoot unexpected challenges in the college and financial aid application processes, and provided ongoing personal support and encouragement.

Ted Mann

December 2009
Ted is extremely supportive of his mentee, Pierre. He not only offers encouragement through email, but helps Pierre bridge the language gap by writing in both his native French and English.

Patti Gregory

November 2009
Patti has shown incredible enthusiasm, support, and consistency in her role as a mentor. Upon being matched, she immediately made arrangements to be available to meet Adrianne at her iMentor Kick Off event in the Bronx.

Alejandro Cajigal

October 2009
Not only did Alejandro email consistently and attend the monthly iMentor events throughout his match with Stephen, he also made time for Stephen outside of iMentor’s regular events. During the school year Stephen and Alejandro often met in iMentor’s Drop-In Center to work on Stephen’s college application.

Margaret Rose de Cruz

September 2009
Margaret and Geraldine are both busy women--or, at the least, their schedules can make it hard to meet up. When Geraldine told Margaret her parents wouldn't let her attend iMentor events at night, Margaret decided to do whatever it took to meet up. Margaret frequently came to the International High School at Prospect Heights, meeting with Geraldine during her iMentor session and catching up in an adjacent classroom.

Lyla Edwards

August 2009
Lyla's relationship with her mentee, Diana, speaks for itself. As her mentor, Lyla always takes the time to make sure she is giving Diana the best possible advice.

Shaina Pomerantz

July 2009
Shaina has supported Stephanie through everything ranging from college applications to personal challenges.

Katie Davis

June 2009
She is consistently lifting Esther up through any academic or personal struggles she happens to face. She is overwhelmingly involved and visibly cares about Esther’s well being.

Katherine LoBalbo

May 2009
Katherine has taken full ownership of her role as a mentor to Aissatou. Not only does she email and attend events consistently (She has met with Aissatou 7 times so far this year!), but she is constantly trying to come up with new ways to better support her mentee.
