Jewish Home Hospital
About the Member
The Jewish Home & Hospital is one of the leading and largest not for profit geriatric health and rehabilitation institutions in the country serving more than 9000 elderly annually with campuses in the Bronx, Manhattan and Westchester. Integral to their mission is an intergenerational youth program for at risk high school students that has been in existence for over 20 years and had an average of 150 youth per year in their programs. The intergenerational youth program has received multiple recognition awards from DFTA and DYCD for excellence in youth programs and critical acclaim by the media including a 2005 NY Times article and subsequent book by Pulitzer Prize winner Sonny Kleinfeld, My Best Friend, chronicling the special relationship between a youth participant and an elder.
About the Partnership
The Jewish Home & Hospital Geriatric Career program was created in 2006 as an experiential youth work force development program providing disadvantaged high school students with academic support, intergenerational mentoring, college preparation, job training and skills that prepares youth to enter the healthcare field.
The Health Professional Youth Mentoring Program will be a new component of the Geriatric Career Program that will use iMentor Interactive to match youth in their program with health care professionals to help support them with academics, college and career counseling, and personal development. Jewish Home will create several new important partnerships including the New York Academy of Medicine’s Hartford Partnership for Aging Education whose mission is to train and grow the national workforce of social workers who specialize in aging; Columbia University’s School of Social Work and the Mailman School of Public Health; Mentoring in Medicine, a New York based program whose mission is to help ensure diversity in the health care workforce by mentoring and exposing underrepresented students to health careers; and The Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Mentors will also be recruited from other schools of medicine, nursing, social work, and allied health as well as the Jewish Home's own health professional staff and board members.
