Dear Friends & Family:
Most of you know (by virtue of my many e-mails) about iMentor, an organization that I have been fortunate to be a part of for the past 5 years. I initially got involved because I wanted to give back to the community, work with teens, and help bridge the digital divide, and I was impressed that iMentor facilitated all three.
I was invited to join the Young Executive Board in 2004 and have continued to act as a mentor. All of my mentees have been in the U.S. for a short period of time, having recently emigrated from China. They usually lack advanced English-speaking skills, but more than compensate with an amazing desire to learn academically and culturally, all with optimism beyond compare.
My current mentee is named Hay Wong. He is in the 11th grade at Lower East Side Prep, a school predominantly attended by children of recent immigrants. Just one year ago, Hay emigrated from Zhuhai, China. He lives with his parents and uncle in Brooklyn. Hay eventually wants to move back to China, but not before graduating from college in the U.S. He aspires to study architecture and design urban structures.
Hay is involved in the student government and when he is not studying hard (!) for his upcoming SATs, he enjoys listening to music and watching basketball.
I have a fundraising goal of $3,000, which is the cost to support 3 mentees pairs for the program year. No amount is too little and any support is appreciated!
Thanks again!
