From Carlos
Despite limited knowledge of iMentor a few years ago, the opportunity to mentor teenagers through e-mail interactions and monthly live meetings was highly appealing to me. As such, I decided to join iMentor in order to give back to the local community. iMentor is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing mentoring relationships between adult volunteers and underprivileged youth.
Over the past three years, I have been involved with iMentor as both a mentee and more recently, a young executive board member. My mentee, Lin Qian (a.k.a. Tom) is a 19-yr-old Chinese immigrant from Lower East Side Prep who shares an interest in business. Given our similar backgrounds, Tom opened up to me quickly regarding both personal and academic topics. Our strong relationship was evident in our 17-week long email exchanges. Tom and I also had the opportunity to get to know each other better at live events where we would engage in deep conversations and long chess matches. Since I met Tom, he scored a 780/800 on his math SAT, secured a prestigious trading floor internship at UBS, became high school class president and recently secured a full scholarship to Lafayette College. I could not have been prouder to have mentored Tom over the past two years and look forward to doing so far past the formal mentoring period.
In order to sponsor additional mentor-mentee pairs, I would like to request your contribution so that iMentor can continue to add to its numerous success stories over the past few years. Thank you very much in advance!
All the best,
Carlos |
