From Barbara
I am currently mentoring Genesis Marte, a 16 year high school student at New York City's School of Business for Young Women.
Genesis came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic, which is where she was born. Genesis loves shopping, spending time with her friends, and dancing. Genesis is very outgoing, friendly, and funny. Her dreams are to go to college and eventually open her own business, maybe a hotel in the Dominican Republic or a school for underprivileged children in the Dominican Republic. Right now, I am helping Genesis to think about her options after high school and encouraging her to improve her grades. We are in particular going to start looking at programs that offer hotel management courses.
iMentor is a great program that matches NYC professionals with inner city high school students. Being a mentor is very important to me because of the impact I believe we all can have on the lives of others. Many students in this program lack mentors from their communities. Sometimes all they need is someone to listen to them and give them good and positive advice.
I have a fundraising goal of $3,000, which is the cost to support 3 mentor-mentee pairs for the program year. No amount is too little and any support is appreciated!
Thank you!
Best,
