From Bill...
I first got interested in iMentor in 2003, when I was invited to attend "The Board Cocktail Party." That evening I listened as a mentee and mentor spoke about how they had met and the experiences they shared over the past year. I listened and thought to myself that this was something I wanted to do. Little did I know the impact that it would have on my life.
The next year I applied to be a mentor and was given a young man from Harlem named John Rodriguez to be my mentee. John taught me more than I ever could have hoped to teach him. He introduced me to films like XXX and actors like Vin Diesel. I bought myself an iPod because of John's love of music (I had never heard of an iPod until John told me). I also watched John develop as a young man.
I visited the Brooklyn International High School where a recently published author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche spoke about her book "Purple Hibiscus" to students from all over the world (students at the school were recent immigrants who had lived in the US less than 4 years). Finally, at NYU Medical Center, I listened as mentees questioned doctors and nurses about the medical field and spoke of their interest and desires to enter it.
At UBS we now have 40 mentor-mentee pairs and it is one of the most popular programs that we offer our employees. It all started with an invitation from my friend Tiger Williams to that "Board Cocktail Party." I thank him for that.
This is a wonderful program and one that can be embraced individually or by corporations. It will touch you, at times challenge you, but most of all reward you as much as it rewards those young men and women who are mentees.
I am very happy to be a part of iMentor.
