Mentor of the Month: Alex Polanco

iMentor Posted on September 29, 2011 - 5:48pm

Mentor:  Alex Polanco

Length of Match: Four years

Mentee Name: Jordan

Mentee’s School: High School for Careers in Sports in the Bronx

When mentor Alex Polanco was growing up in New York City he felt like he had limited opportunities and few people to look up to. He had a tough time in school, but with the help of a caring teacher, he got involved in after-school activities, was connected to a summer job, and got recommendations for college. His teacher was a true mentor in his life who helped Alex find his way to academic and career success. It is his mentor’s lasting influence that motivated Alex to become a volunteer with iMentor two years ago.

Now that Alex had discovered his own path, he was looking to make a long-term impact in the life of a student in New York. He turned to iMentor because the multi-year matches will allow him to help his mentee, Jordan, throughout the full course of his high school career. Alex describes his motivation for mentoring best in the blog post he recently wrote on his company’s website. He is our Mentor of the Month for living up to credo from Gandhi we use to inspire us here at iMentor: “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

iMentor Partners with Groupon to Fund Kickoff to College Events

iMentor Posted on September 26, 2011 - 7:06pm

Anyone who has been through the college application process knows how daunting it can be to write college essays, fill out financial aid forms, and make the decisions that can impact the rest of their academic career. iMentor wants to make sure our mentees don’t have to make these important decisions alone. That is why we host the juniors in our New York City program at special events to work one-on-one with their mentors to plan their application process. And this year, Groupon has decided to help.

Today, we announced with G-Team, the philanthropic arm of Groupon, a campaign to raise funds to host iMentor’s Kickoff to College events for juniors. Today through Thursday, September 29, Groupon subscibers and iMentor supporters can contribute to our Kickoff to College events in increments of $10. If just 60 donors give $10 each, iMentor will be able to host 100 students and their mentors for an evening of college planning. At these events, our dedicated mentors will work with students to research colleges, explore scholarship opportunities, and plan financial aid. Additional donations will allow iMentor to support more students, ensuring that our mentees have the tools they need to make informed decisions about college.

The Kickoff to College events are just one aspect of our robust mentoring program, which is serving 2,400 New York City high school students this fall. Visit our Groupon campaign page and help us spread the word!

iMentor Marks a Year of Expansion and Success

iMentor Posted on September 9, 2011 - 9:43am

Last month, iMentor’s entire New York-based team gathered together for four days of presentations, workshops, and teambuilding activities at the annual All Staff Orientation. This year’s orientation was especially exciting for veteran staff members who have been celebrating iMentor’s rapid growth, as it marked the start of more than 20 talented new people to support our expanding programs, bringing the total staff count to over 70.

Throughout the week, the team came together to talk about iMentor’s history, success, challenges, and plans for dramatic growth in both the NYC and iMentor Interactive programs. Innovation, constant improvement, program quality, and impact were important themes in every session.

This week the NYC Program team is hard at work preparing for our biggest year yet: matching 2,400 mentor-mentee pairs throughout New York City. While they get ready to partner with schools, support students, and coach mentors toward success, the Volunteer Team is busy recruiting additional mentors to meet the needs of this year’s students.

At the same time, the iMentor Interactive team is kicking off relationships with their first national-scale partnerships in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Philadelphia, and Miami. The team is leading member organizations in launching successful mentoring programs using the iMentor model.

It’s a very big year for iMentor and the entire staff is buzzing with enthusiasm and dedication to use our mentoring model to ensure that more kids succeed in high school and college.

Are you interested in helping us to reach these goals? Apply to become a mentor or consider joining our staff.
