Mentors & Mentees Give Back

iMentor Posted on December 20, 2007 - 1:00am

Last week, iMentor sponsored four community service events, attended by 180 mentor-mentee pairs. The community service projects allowed pairs to reflect on the meaning of community, service, and mentoring.\

Pairs crafted community murals for iMentor partner schools, created over 300 holiday cards for homebound elderly clients receiving holiday dinners through the City Meals-on-Wheels Program, and created 300 Goodwill Bags which will be donated to the students of The Door.

In the spirit of giving and community service, our mentor-mentee pairs offered their time and generosity to helping others. In the process, they continued to cultivate their relationships by sharing their own stories of celebration. Thank you to all of our mentors and mentees for making such an important act of kindness, generosity, and service so successful!

We’d like to send a special thank you to our corporate partners at Morrison & Foerster, Credit Suisse, and UBS for their generous donation of event space.

iMentor Featured on WNBC*

Posted on December 7, 2007 - 1:00am

Last night, WNBC news correspondent Perri Peltz ran a feature on iMentor as part of the New York Nightly News.

The piece profiled two of our phenomenal mentor-mentee pairs, both matched in multi-year relationships, both committed to working together until their mentee graduates high school. Click on the video below to see Deborah Mason (from Goldman Sachs), matched with Keisha through our partnership at International High School Prospect Heights and Antonia Townsend (a new Young Executive Board Member ) matched with her mentee Pincess-Joy (at Bronx Prep). See below for iMentor's big night in the news!

Kick Off's Kick Off

Posted on December 5, 2007 - 1:00am

It's our favorite time of year here at iMentor, Kick-Off season, the months of November and December where mentors travel to their mentee's home community, to visit their mentee's school, and our pairs meet in person for the first time.

This year, we have seen more pairs meet in the first six weeks of being matched than any year in iMentor's history. With an estimated 80-90% Kick-Off attendance city wide! We thank our mentors and mentees for taking this important first step and iMentor's Program Coordinators for making it all possible!

Posted on November 14, 2007 - 1:00am

iMentor was honored to be selected as the sole beneficiary of the 100 Women in Hedge Funds' 6th Annual Gala, which took place at Cipriani on November 14th. 100 Women in Hedge Funds is a global association of more than 5,000 professional women serving the hedge fund industry. Each year the group selects one or two charitable organizations to benefit from their gala. The philanthropic focus for 2007 is mentoring and the beneficiary is iMentor! The event was a huge success and a lot of fun. Check out the pictures below.

Keisha with her mentor Deborah

In 2005, iMentor was selected to become a member of The Catalog for Giving. For the last twelve years, The Catalog has highlighted the impact of its member agencies by hosting an annual event to honor the young people that they serve. Mentee Keshia accepted the 2007 Urban Hero Award on behalf of iMentor, along with 9 other extraordinary young people who, through tenacity, hard work, and courage, have overcome difficult life challenges to become role models for others in their communities. In accepting the award, Keshia gave a speech to more than 300 attendees, sharing her moving story, the impact her mentor Deborah (and iMentor) has had on her future academic and career goals.

Meet the Program Coordinators

Posted on October 1, 2007 - 12:00am

In order to provide each mentor-mentee pair with more individualized support, iMentor has increased its Program Coordinator corps for the 2007-08 program year. Program Coordinators are responsible for all aspects of mentor-mentee relationship facilitation, including: matching pairs, running the weekly iMentor Session, planning and staffing iMentor events and working individually with each mentor and mentee to develop the strongest possible relationship. This year, we have been blown away by the talent and dedication of our seven Program Coordinators, led by Senior PC Cat Ang.

iMentor Goes National with iMi*

Posted on September 2, 2007 - 12:00am

Why is there a 15 million person mentoring gap in this country?

The benefits of mentoring are well established, yet the vast majority of youth-development organizations do not have the tools or resources necessary to add a quality mentoring component to their programming. We wondered: what if these organizations had access to an online social network built specifically for mentoring, providing participants and staff with the tools and expertise necessary to run a quality mentoring program, instantly? Our answer is iMi.

What is iMi?

iMentor Interactive (iMi) is an online mentoring social network designed exclusively for non-profits. The software provides any organization with all the tools and resources they need to run a quality mentoring program, instantly.

Meet the Specialists*

Posted on August 29, 2007 - 12:00am

This year, iMentor has targeted two key areas of its program and deepened staff resources around (1) volunteer management and (2) the curricula mentors and mentees use to develop their relationship. This spring we launched two new specialty positions: Director of Curricula and Volunteer Manager.

Volunteer Manager

For the first time ever, iMentor has a single staff member dedicated to mentor recruitment, screening, training and ongoing development. Ellen Mahoney came to iMentor in the Spring of 2007, after 10 years of working in adolescent education. If you are a new mentor this year, you know Ellen already. In her first four months, Ellen successfully lead the recruitment and training of 800 volunteer mentors.

Director of Curricula

Ever wonder who is behind your weekly writing prompts and in-person meeting activities? Unique Fraser brings years of experience in education curriculum development to her new role at iMentor. This year, Unique will focus on expanding and diversifying mentor-mentee writing prompts, as well as leading iMentor's monthly SCA workshops[update link] and running the iMentor Drop-In Center[update link].
